TACLOBAN CITY – The city government of Borongan in Eastern Samar will renew its contract with Philippine Airlines (PAL) for the continuation of Manila-Cebu-Borongan flights.

Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda said he is in consultation with city councilors to thresh out the proposal to renew the agreement as it is about to expire in December.

Agda and PAL president and chief operating officer Capt. Stanley Ng signed on Nov. 30, 2022 a memorandum of agreement for the operation of Manila-Cebu-Borongan flights every Monday and Friday.

PAL had its inaugural flight to Borongan City Airport on Dec. 19, 2022.

“The MOA will be on the same scheme as the previous because we have already seen the impact of the flights and we want to sustain it,” Agda said in a phone interview Monday.

Agda said they would request PAL to increase the flight frequency from twice to thrice a week.

He cited the high passenger traffic last September when PAL had two additional flights for the city's fiesta.

PAL is the first commercial airline to launch a regular flight to Borongan City after the local airport’s completion in March 2013.

Meanwhile, Agda thanked the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) for citing Borongan City Airport as the model for the modular construction system to offer a sustainable approach to constructing terminal facilities with passenger amenities, as it minimizes construction waste.

In a statement, CAAP said the same construction concept used in Borongan using “pre-fabricated structural steels” will be used in the improvement of Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental. (PNA)
