DAVAO CITY - At least 43 secondary schools in Davao City and parts of Davao del Norte have benefited from an initiative that provides modern electrical installation and maintenance (EIM) laboratories for students to upgrade their skills and receive national certification.
The latest schools to receive an EIM facility is the J.V. Ferriols National High School and the Optaciano Hilay National High School in Davao City during a turnover ceremony on Monday.
Davao Light and Power Co. Inc. (Davao Light) president and Chief Operating Officer Rodger Velasco said the “Project Electrical Lab” project, launched in 2014, is part of the power firm's support to the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track of the Department of Education (DepEd).
Through the firm's social development arm, Aboitiz Foundation Inc., the initiative seeks to provide skills training and assessment facilities for high school learners where course finishers can receive a National Certification II from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
Each electrical installation and maintenance laboratory costs PHP1.3 million.
“We want to create a value where we go beyond just mere compliance when it comes to corporate social responsibility projects. We want an opportunity for growth in learning, experience, and favorable employment conditions,” Velasco said in an interview.
He said the initiative also aims to contribute to the fourth Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations, "which is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all." (PNA)
