SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The youth can do so much in fighting disinformation and fake news by sharing only verified information online.

This was the challenge issued by La Union Governor Raphaella Veronica Ortega-David during a talk before some 400 high school students at the provincial convention center on Monday.

“You may not realize it in your daily activities but you are actually contributing to helping our province mates in decision making,” she told the students during the inaugural “COMMunity,” a content creation education seminar.

David urged the participants to take data-gathering seriously and to always countercheck before sharing on social media.

“Think before you click, think before you post. Let us add touch of being relevant, vibrant, outstanding, and developmental in our work,” she said, citing that the provincial government wants to empower and educate the youth as communication agents.

“All of us serve as a medium to bring to our people the information they need. This is our way to empower you as part of nation building,” she added.

La Union information officer Rowan Joshua Dimaculangan, in a phone interview on Tuesday, said the province gives importance to critical information dissemination especially with the modern media widely used and accessed by young people.

"Right now, information is very important. Now more than ever, information dissemination is very critical to our province. We hope we could accommodate more in the next COMMunity," he said, noting that Monday’s event is the first of such event in the province.

Irish Dacusan Esguerra, a participant from Bacnotan National High School, posted on her social media account how grateful she was to attend the caravan.

“I have learned so much on how to become a content creator and on managing myself on social media,” she said. (PNA)
