MANILA – The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) said Wednesday it will offer PHP29 per kilogram of rice alongside cheaper fish and vegetables on May 16 to 17 at the Kadiwa stall in the BPI Multipurpose Hall in San Andres, Malate in support of local farmers and consumers.
In an advisory, the BPI said Kadiwa store hours will be from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., or until supplies last.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) earlier vowed to offer rice at similar prices in Kadiwa sites in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao in August through the National Irrigation Administration's (NIA) contract farming program.
Besides cheaper rice, the BPI will also grant "an all-out discount with no limit" for fish, particularly for tilapia and bangus, which will be sold at only PHP80/kg and PHP130/kg, respectively.
Chicken will be sold at PHP180/kg; garlic at PHP150/kg; red onion at PHP90/kg; and white onion at PHP90/kg.
These prices are much lower compared to the current prevailing prices of commodities in Metro Manila including tilapia ranging at PHP100/kg to PHP160/kg; bangus at PHP130 to PHP240/kg; chicken at up to PHP220/kg; imported garlic at PHP130 to PHP180/kg; as well as local red and white onions pegged at PHP70/kg to PHP140/kg, and PHP60/kg to PHP130/kg, respectively.
The BPI said more affordable commodities like eggs, fruits, and other vegetables are also available at the BPI Kadiwa stall. (PNA)
