MANILA – The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday assured prompt action on the case of an Australian fugitive wanted by Indonesian authorities for drug trafficking.
The Bureau of Immigration Fugitive Search Unit ((FSU) arrested 46-year-old Gregor Johann Haas last May 15 in Bogo, Cebu following a red notice by the Interpol.
The National Narcotics Board of Indonesia on Jan. 29 issued an arrest warrant against the fugitive for attempting to smuggle five kilos of illegal drugs hidden in floor ceramic from Guadalajara, Mexico into Indonesia.
“The apprehension of this high-profile fugitive sends a clear message: those who violate our laws and threaten public safety will be brought to justice,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said in a statement. “Let this be a constant reminder that the Philippines is neither a haven nor sanctuary for foreign fugitives.”
Remulla commended the BI staff for their “hard work and dedication” in ensuring Haas’ apprehension, and “his deportation, the soonest.”
Haas is currently detained at the BI Warden Facility in Camo Bagong Diwa, Taguig City pending deportation proceedings. (PNA)
