MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has advised Filipinos in New Caledonia to avoid public spaces as it raised alert level 2 or restriction phase amid riots and unrest in the French territory.

“Filipinos living in New Caledonia are advised to remain vigilant, avoid public spaces, and restrict non-essential movement. Filipinos are also advised to monitor and follow guidelines set by local authorities,” it said.

Based on the latest DFA data, there are about 200 Filipinos and Filipinos by descent living in New Caledonia.

France earlier declared a state of emergency in its overseas Pacific territory following deadly protests linked to Paris' plan to reform the latter's voting rights.

The state of emergency took effect on May 15 and was lifted on May 28, but curfew remains.

Since the protests began, local reports said at least seven died while dozens were left injured. (PNA)
