Teen wonder Cutiyog triumphs in Cavite chess tournament

MANILA – Jirah Floravie Cutiyog ruled the 1st BGA Realty CEO President Gerry Bustamante 1900 and below rapid chess tournament at Robinsons Place Imus in Cavite on Sunday.

It was the 15-year-old Cutiyog’s fourth title after sweeping the Under-16 division (standard, rapid and blitz) in the National Age Group Chess Eliminations in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental on June 5.

She was also blitz and rapid champion in the Calabarzon Regionals held in the City of Santa Rosa, Laguna in April that earned her a spot in the July Palarong Pambansa in Cebu. 

“I am happy with my performance,” Cutiyog, a Grade 9 student at Bethel Academy General Trias City, said.

Cutiyog beat Kermiel Laxamana, Arena International Master Rowel Canaveral, Elcid Estaron, Noel Trines Jr., Arena FIDE Master Jaymiel Piel and Clark Kaeron Kwan to pocket PHP3,000 in cash prize and a trophy.

Last year, Cutiyog competed at the World Youth Chess Championship in Montesilvano, Italy.

She will join the National Age Group Chess Championships grand finals in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte on June 22 to 30 and the Eastern Asia Chess Championships in Penang, Malaysia on July 12 to 21. (PNA)
