MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday assured the public that teachers' education and appointments for the Teachers Education Council (TEC) Secretariat remain its priority.
DepEd released its official statement following “insinuations of delay from advocacy groups.”
“DepEd has always held the highest regard for teacher quality and has consistently made teacher education a top priority. As chairperson, Vice President and Secretary of the Department of Education Sara Duterte spearheaded multiple meetings of the TEC,” it said.
It also underscored the importance of the TEC’s function in terms of enhancing training for teachers.
“We assure our education stakeholders that the appointments will be completed in due course and in accordance with existing rules, as the TEC embarks on its critical work for the benefit of our Filipino teachers,” the DepEd said.
Duterte earlier led the regular meetings for the “creation, selection, and appointments” of those qualified for the TEC Secretariat, with the submission of its proposed organizational structure and staffing pattern (OSSP) to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) on March 25.
The DBM approved the OSSP on May 21 including the approval of the creation of 25 permanent positions for the TEC Secretariat.
As support to the council, four units were also included: the Office of the Executive Director, the Student Incentives Support Office, the Quality Pre-Service Teacher Education Office, and the Quality Teaching Office.
The TEC Secretariat's function includes providing technical and administrative assistance to the TEC for policy and program recommendations, execution, and coordination, as prescribed in Republic Act 7784 or An Act to strengthen teacher education in the Philippines. (PNA)
