MANILA – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is eyeing to finalize the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Roadmap 2.0 within this year that will include the sector’s targets on artificial intelligence (AI) contribution to gross domestic produce (GDP), investments and jobs, among others.

On Wednesday, the DTI led the launching of the NSAIR 2.0, or the updated blueprint of the AI sector.

But unlike the agency’s previous roadmaps which bared targets on GDP share, investments to be attracted, and jobs to be generated by implementing the strategies, DTI Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba said these figures will be included once these targets will be finalized before the year ends.

“We are still discussing about it because our AI direction is still broad. In terms of (determining) the investments that will be generated, jobs, this is what we are doing now,” Aldaba told reporters on the sidelines of the NSAIR 2.0 launching in Mandaluyong City.

NSAIR 2.0 is an updated version of the 2021 roadmap, but the ambition of the country to be the AI research powerhouse in Southeast Asia remains.

“The previous roadmap does not include the ethics, regulatory framework, and principles —they were mentioned but the detailed principles were not identified,” said Aldaba, who is the DTI’s head for Competitiveness and Innovation Group.

Aldaba said while the updated roadmap is still being completed, the DTI will start various projects that will support the growth of the country’s AI industry.

These include the Center for AI Research, which will be the hub for AI-related research and development in the country.

At the launching, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the country is expected to gain PHP2 trillion annually by implementing AI solutions in business. (PNA)
