CEBU CITY – Contingency plans are in place to ensure the games for the Palarong Pambansa 2024 will not be hampered after the weather bureau predicted that two to three typhoons may enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) this month, an official said on Friday.

Adolf Aguilar, assistant school division superintendent of Cebu City,  said the games should proceed as planned since the organizers are capable of handling weather concerns citing their experience during last year’s game in Marikina City.

He said they have outlined measures in case heavy rains and flooding occur in sports events venues.

“Measures (will be) implemented for the games affected by the weather. We have indoor venues at the Alta Vista and Citigreen for tennis, in case there will be heavy rains, so we will just transfer the venues, we will extend the games until the evening,” he added.

In case of extreme hot weather, tournament managers are given the discretion to halt the games and wait for temperatures to subside.

Organizers will also monitor the heat index to implement mandatory time out if needed.

Meanwhile, the Cebu City Police is now on full alert as delegates across the country are beginning to arrive in time for the opening ceremony on July 9.

“Your police is doing its best to ensure the safety and security of the 12,000 delegates who will be in Cebu City for the Palaro. We are asking the Cebuanos to support your police in their job to make this national event a success,” Cebu City Police Chief Col. Ireneo Dalogdog Dalogdog said in Cebuano.

The local police will implement a “no-big-backpack” policy for hassle-free entry at the Cebu City Sports Center where the main events of the Palaro will be held from July 9 to 16. (PNA)
