CEBU CITY – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) bolsters its protected area management in Central Visayas through the use of advanced technology.
“Drones would be beneficial in protecting natural resources, especially in monitoring wildlife movement. We also use the technology in mapping forest health and detecting illegal activities in our protected areas,” Director Charlie Fabre, Officer-in-Charge of DENR-7, said during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas forum here on Tuesday.
The DENR and its attached bureaus closely work with local government units (LGUs) to adopt a 10-year solid waste management plan, as required by Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act.
The law requires each LGU plan to include an implementation schedule to divert at least 25 percent of all solid waste from waste disposal facilities through reuse, recycling, composting and other resource recovery activities.
LGUs are likewise mandated to adopt waste diversion targets, establish a materials recovery facility and maintain a disposal facility.
Of the 132 LGUs in Central Visayas, 118 have already crafted their 10-year plans.
“By the end of the year, we will monitor. They should comply that there should be no more open dumpsite,” Fabre said.
Fabre also urged LGUs in the region to invest in environmental preservation and conservation awareness campaigns. (PNA)
