MANILA – The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Luzon grid under yellow alert on Wednesday, attributing the thinner power supply to the tripping of the 417.4-megawatt San Gabriel power plant.

In an advisory, the NGCP said the yellow alert in the Luzon grid will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Available capacity in the grid on Wednesday is at 13,198 MW, while peak demand is expected at 12,028 MW, leaving an operating margin of 1,178 MW.

“One plant has been on forced outage since 2023, eight between January and May 2024, and six power plants between June and July 2024, while six are running on derated capacities for a total of 1,652.7 MW unavailable to the grid,” the NGCP said.

The NGCP issues yellow alert when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. (PNA)
