ILOILO CITY – The Sangguniang Panlungsod on Wednesday adopted a resolution banning the operation of the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), now known as Internet Gaming Licensee (IGL), and its local gaming agents in Iloilo City.

Councilor Romel D. Duron, author of the resolution, said the move is a preventive measure if POGO operators try to open their operations in the city.

Duron said the ban was an offshoot of his previous privilege speech about illegal immigrants residing in the city and foreigners engaging in unlawful activities.

It is also in conformity with Executive Order No. 094, signed by Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, detailing the policy of the city government against illegal POGO operations.

The resolution, he added, further endorses House Bills 5082 and 1197, which both seek to ban POGO due to several crimes linked to the operations and amid fears of national security implications.

Duron emphasized that before the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) issues a license, they should first request the consent of the local government.

“POGO or IGL’s purpose of its business operation in Iloilo City will inevitably destroy the reputation and dignity of Iloilo City and its people,” the resolution added. (With reports from Eljolene Tacadao /WVSU OJT/ PNA)
