MANILA – Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Deputy Director-General Ares Gutierrez on Friday addressed graduates of a social media training program for military personnel, highlighting the growing threat of cyber warfare and disinformation campaigns against the Philippines.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Social Media Product Development and Management Training, Gutierrez reported a 300-percent increase in malicious online activities targeting the country since the start of 2024.

“As administrators of military social media accounts, you are on the frontline of what we call the war on information,’” Gutierrez told the graduates at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, composed mostly of young service members whom he dubbed digital natives.

Gutierrez cited Unite States-based cybersecurity firm Resecurity’s reports of heightened cyberattacks, many allegedly linked to China-affiliated groups.

He mentioned specific threats from hacker groups like Mustang Panda, Exodus Security and Death Note Hackers.

The PIA official emphasized the agency’s role in countering disinformation, particularly regarding issues in the West Philippine Sea.

He also highlighted PIA’s support for various government task forces and its upcoming campaign to promote peace and reconciliation efforts.

Gutierrez then encouraged cooperation between PIA staff and military officers in addressing emerging national security challenges.

The ceremony was held at the AFP Civil Relations Service headquarters, with Maj. Gen. Ramon Sagala and other military officials in attendance. (PIA)
