LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – The provincial government of La Union recorded an initial estimate of PHP41 million damage to agriculture, PHP17 million to infrastructure, and PHP1.96 million to tourism due to the southwest monsoon enhanced by Super Typhoon Carina.

In a report on Monday, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office chief Aureliano Rulloda III said all local government units reported losses in high-value crops, agri-infrastructures, rice and fisheries.

On infrastructure, he said the damage was mostly on roads and river slopes, farm-to-market, provincial and municipal roads.

The damage to infrastructure was in Burgos, Naguilian, Caba, Bagulin, Bauang, Bacnotan towns, and San Fernando City.

Tourism was also affected since the heavy rains damaged and flooded resorts and grape farms, most of which are in Bauang and Caba towns.

"The figures are only estimated costs and the reported damages are still subject for validation," the La Union Provincial Information Office said.

As of Monday morning, the towns of Agoo, Luna, Caba, Santo, and San Juan are still flooded amid the exit of Super Typhoon Carina Thursday last week.

Classes at all levels are suspended in the towns of Agoo, Luna, Balaoan, Bacnotan, Sudipen, Bauang, San Juan, Bangar, Tubao, Santo Tomas, Bagulin, Aringay, Caba, and San Gabriel on the opening of school year 2024-25 on Monday.

Some 12,637 families or 44,483 persons in the province have been affected by the weather disturbance, according to PDRRMO.

The provincial government, with the augmentation from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, provided relief packs to affected families. (PNA)
