MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – About 10,603 farmers from the Ilocos Region whose farmlands have been destroyed by the Super Typhoon Carina-enhanced southwest monsoon are set to receive indemnity worth PHP238,544 from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC).

This is based on the assessment conducted by the PCIC-Ilocos Region as of July 25, said Gaudencio Tangalin, PCIC Claims and Adjustment Division in-charge, in a phone interview on Wednesday.

“We have estimated 30 percent of the total insured farmlands and farmers covering three commodities, which are rice, corn, and high-value crops,” he said in Filipino.

Most of the affected farms are in low-lying areas in the region, he said.

PCIC-Ilocos data show that about 8,706 of the 29,021 rice farmers, 631 of the 2,105 corn farmers, and 1,266 of the 4,219 high-value crop farmers were affected by the recent weather disturbance.

An estimated 9,114 hectares (ha) of the 30,380 ha of rice farms, 459.64 ha. of the 1,532 ha of corn fields, and 761.78 ha of the 2,539.25 ha of high-value crops farmlands have been destroyed.

Tangulin said the affected farmers would have to file for claims in their office, which they will validate.

“They will receive their corresponding indemnity after a month from filing,” he added. (PNA)
