CEBU CITY – Residences and establishments in the tourist Island of Malapascua will no longer experience power service interruption as the provincial government of Cebu installed generator sets that will supply electricity in the area, Governor Gwendolyn Garcia said Wednesday.

In a press conference, Garcia said the province of Cebu is now operating a generation set to supply power for distribution on the island through the Cebu Electric Cooperative (Cebeco) II.

“This is the province now that is supplying power to Cebeco. Cebeco has now terminated its waiver of distribution right in the franchise area and Cebeco is now taking care of the distribution,” she said.

Last May, the Capitol delivered four sets of 500 kilovolt-amperes (KVA) generators to Malapascua Island that can provide two megawatts, enough for the island's peak power demand.

Garcia led the ceremonial switch-on, signaling the start of the province-led power service, even as she promised an uninterrupted and efficient power supply for the premier tourist island in Cebu unlike before when the island leaned on unreliable power services under a private firm.

She said the province entered into a partnership with Cebeco II to end the island’s frequent outages. (PNA)
