ILOILO CITY – Another member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed during an encounter in remote Barangay Cabatangan in Labunao town, Iloilo province on Wednesday.

Killed was Jose Jerry Tacaisan, alias Miller and Bronze, 54, and a resident of Sitio Tabionan, Barangay Bucari, Leon town. The incident also resulted in the recovery of a high-powered firearm.

Tacaisan was a member of the Regional Headquarters (RHQ) and a former squad leader of the dismantled Southern Panay Front.

The troops were conducting operations following a tip from residents about the presence of armed rebels around 10:40 a.m. when the firefight ensued, the 3rd Division Public Affairs Office (DPAO) statement said.

Recovered from the incident included an M16 assault rifle, 85 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, magazines for M16, a bandolier, subversive documents with high intelligence value, and personal belongings.

The encounter happened just two days after government troops clashed with rebels in the adjacent town of Calinog, where another NPA was also killed. (PNA)
