LEGAZPI CITY – To provide sustainable livelihood to a farmers' group in Albay, the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Bicol (DSWD-5), through its Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP), on Thursday gave a seed capital of PHP300,000 for its goat-raising project.

In a phone interview, Jastine Joy Dichoso Escuro, DSWD-Bicol project development officer for SLP, said the distribution is part of DSWD’s ongoing efforts to enhance food security and promote sustainable livelihoods in rural communities.

"The Maninila Camalig Goat Raising SLP Association with 24 members also received comprehensive goat-raising training. Participants learned modern techniques for breeding, feeding, and health management in goat farming and raising. They also received sessions on Basic Business Management, Micro Enterprise Development, Financial Literacy, and Leadership," she said.

She said the group was taught sustainable farming practices and the economic benefits of integrating goat farming with other agricultural activities for diversified income streams on Wednesday.

"Goats provide nutritious meat and milk, aiding agricultural diversification and serving as income sources for small-scale farmers. By imparting training and resources, DSWD-Bicol enables participants to attain sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the local food supply," she said.

In a statement, DSWD-Bicol Regional Director Norman Laurio affirmed the agency's commitment to addressing regional food security concerns.

“Under Secretary Rex Gatchalian’s directive, SLP prioritizes projects that not only create income opportunities but also strengthen food security frameworks," he said. (PNA)
