TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) regional office will provide a mobile command and control vehicle with triage technology to the local government unit of Pintuyan, Southern Leyte, to enhance the latter’s monitoring and response during calamities.

DOST-Eastern Visayas Regional Director John Glenn Ocaña said in a phone interview on Thursday that they have signed an agreement with Pintuyan town Mayor Recarte Estrella to enhance local disaster management through the PHP18-million mobile technology.

“Equipped with advanced features, the technology includes a weather monitoring station, a rescue quadcopter drone, global satellite communication, surveillance equipment, and medical supplies,” Ocaña told the Philippine News Agency.

It also houses a portable boat for rescue operations and a conference room, serving as a mobile command center. The vehicle's solar and wind power capabilities ensure uninterrupted operations during power outages.

“The vehicle is set to significantly improve Pintuyan's ability to monitor and respond to emergencies, a crucial development following the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Odette in December 2021,” Ocaña added.

Pintuyan was one of the most affected towns in Southern Leyte province when the super typhoon struck, killing 19 people and displacing 462,908 individuals in the province.

The DOST will turn over funds to Pintuyan local government for the acquisition of custom-made vehicle within the year.

The unit will support the rapid deployment of a command center, especially in remote areas. It will also help mobilize resources and enable swift coordination and communication among national and local government agencies responding to a disaster or emergency since it provides real-time updates.

This vehicle will be the first deployment in Southern Leyte.

Earlier, the DOST handed over a similar mobile command technology in Eastern Samar province. (PNA)
