CEBU CITY – The premier airport in Central Visayas has adopted ground power solutions to reduce carbon emissions and offset fuel costs during boarding and arrival of passengers, an airport official said Monday.

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) introduced Fixed Power Unit (FPU) and Pre-conditioned Air (PCA) services as part of an effort to global environmental sustainability movement by cutting carbon emissions and promoting fuel efficiency.

“Being the second busiest airport in the country, we want to make sure to manage our carbon footprint and maintain good air quality for both passengers and workers in the airport. This is why we highly encourage airlines to use FPU and PCA units,” said Julius Neri Jr., Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority general manager.

Fixed Power Unit is an eco-friendly ground power system that enables aircraft to connect directly to a stationary, electricity-powered energy source while on the airfield.

On the other hand, PCA is an external device used for heating, cooling, and dehumidifying that delivers fresh, preconditioned air to the aircraft and jet bridges between flights.

Athanasios Titonis, Aboitiz InfraCapital GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation chief executive officer, said that international airports like Hong Kong, Zurich, Dublin and Munich adopted the same innovative solutions to minimize their ecological footprint.

He said the MCIA is thrilled to join the airports worldwide in the global sustainability movement. (PNA)
