ILOILO CITY – This year’s 87th Charter Day celebration will be one of the grandest for this city, focusing on honoring exemplary Ilonggos in various sectors.

“This is one of our biggest celebrations.  We have started with outstanding employees. We are going to have a program for outstanding police officers and also for outstanding teachers aside from the outstanding Ilonggos and lifetime awards,” said Mayor Jerry Treñas during a press conference on Monday.

The mayor said the city government assured the public that they would “get the best of the best Ilonggos” deserving of the award.

The city government recognized 38 employees and three departments in a ceremony on Monday.

Treñas hoped they would serve as inspiration and motivation to other city hall employees to also do well in their work.

On Aug. 22, the city government will hold an awarding ceremony for best police officers and teachers.

On the other hand, a ceremony to award the Ten Outstanding Ilonggos of Iloilo City, Diamond, and Lifetime Achievement Awardees is set on Aug. 23.

“We want to do this every year. At least we see the kind of performance we should emulate,” he said.

The mayor will also deliver his State of the City Address on Aug. 30.
“It will be a clear statement of what we have done and where we are heading. We’ve done a lot. I’m proud of our employees, department heads, and Ilonggos, but we still have so much to do,” he said.

Initially, he cited the redevelopment of city-run public markets and plazas as among the city’s biggest accomplishments.

Iloilo City was formally inaugurated as a chartered city on Aug. 25, 1937, with then Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon leading the event.
This year’s celebration has for its theme Rise, Iloilo City: Remarkable Ilonggos Sustaining Excellence @ 87. (PNA)
