MANILA – Fuel surcharge for September will be back to Level 5, down one notch from Level 6 implemented in August.

Under Level 5, the fuel surcharge for domestic flights will range from PHP151 to PHP542, and from PHP498.03 to PHP3,703.11 for international flights, depending on the distance.

The current Level 6 fuel surcharge ranges from PHP185 to PHP665 for domestic, and from PHP610.37 to PHP4,538.4 for international destinations.

"We welcome the decision of the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) to lower the fuel surcharge for the month of September. This recent adjustment is a positive development that supports our efforts to offer more affordable travel options," said Cebu Pacific president Xander Lao in a statement.

He added that the Gokongwei-led airline is dedicated to offering value-for-money fares to its customers and looks forward to carrying more passengers as it continues to boost connectivity across its hubs.

AirAsia Philippines, on the other hand, said the lowering of fuel surcharge would have a huge impact on the public's booking behavior.

Fuel surcharge is the extra fee that airlines may collect in addition to the base fare to cover the costs incurred from the volatility of fuel.

In an advisory dated Aug. 18, the CAB said airlines wishing to impose or collect fuel surcharge must file an application with the Office of the Executive Director on or before the effectivity period.

The applicable conversion rate is USD1 to PHP58.29, the CAB said. (PNA)
