MANILA – The Senate has confirmed hacking of its website but said the extracted usernames and logs were just for uploading public documents.

"The logs include basic metadata, such as the upload date and file size, which do not pose any significant security risk," Senate Spokesperson Arnel Jose S. Bañas said in a statement Wednesday evening.

"We therefore confirm the statement of DICT (Department of Information and Communications Technology) Assistant Secretary Renato Paraiso that the incident is not cause for alarm."

The DICT reported earlier a hacker group called DeathNote Hackers breached the Senate of the Philippines' website and stole employees' usernames and logs.

Cybersecurity group Deep Web Konek likewise reported about the hacking.

But Bañas assured the illegal access gained only public documents like committee hearing transcripts and plenary session journals, all readily available for the public to download.

He vowed that the Senate would continue to ensure that the website remains secure and protected by robust cybersecurity measures. (PNA)
