Navy rules ROTC Games national championships

MANILA – Philippine Navy bagged 44 gold medals to rule the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Games national championships which concluded Saturday at Cavite State University (CvSU) in Indang. 

Shooter Danielle Benjamin Cruz (De La Salle University-Taft) and boxer Benie Tabaco-an (University of Antique) were among the medalists for Navy, which also collected 19 silver and 26 bronze medals.

The Philippine Army finished second with 42 golds, 54 silvers and 77 bronzes, while the Philippine Air Force was third with 18 golds, 27 silvers and 39 bronzes.

Meanwhile, DLSU captured 25 golds and three silvers to dominate the Schools division.

Rizal Technological University-Boni (Mandaluyong) placed second with 16 golds, 17 silvers and 11 bronzes, followed by University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (6-6-4), Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation in Lucena City (4-3-4), Cebu Normal University (4-2-2), Virgen Milagrosa in San Carlos City, Pangasinan (4-2-2), Philippine State College of Aeronautics (3-4-3), University of Baguio (3-2-4), John B. Lacson of Bacolod City (3-0-0) and Polytechnic University of the Philippines (2-3-1).

The ROTC Games was initiated by Senator Francis Tolentino to promote physical education and foster self-discipline, teamwork and excellence among cadets.

“The aim is to train, motivate, organize and mobilize students for national defense preparedness, including disaster preparedness and capacity building for risk-related situations,” Tolentino, an Army Brigade Commander of the 1501st Ready Reserve Brigade, said in a statement.

The Philippine Sports Commission is tasked to organize the event in coordination with the Department of National Defense, Armed Forces of the Philippines and Commission on Higher Education. (PNA)
