CALAMBA CITY, Laguna – The Department of Health Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) in Region 4A (Calabarzon) has confirmed the first case of mpox in the region as of Aug. 29.

Moahna Tagle, spokesperson for DOH-4A, said in a phone interview on Thursday that the patient, who has no recent travel history, began showing symptoms including fever and rashes on Aug. 10.

The patient sought consultation at a rural health center and has since been under close monitoring by local health authorities, as reported by the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU).

Mpox, also known as monkeypox, commonly presents with skin rashes or mucosal lesions, which can last two to four weeks.

Additional symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, muscle aches, back pain, headache, and fatigue.

“It is important to adhere to health protocols to prevent the spread of mpox,” Tagle said.

Recommended measures include practicing good respiratory etiquette, frequent handwashing with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and ensuring that bedding, clothing, and linens are thoroughly cleaned. (PNA)
