ILOILO CITY – The National Police Commission (Napolcom) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) have targeted Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) in various schools in Western Visayas to help the organization in the crime prevention campaign.
Napolcom Regional Director Lawyer Jerome Asuga said this effort is part of the 30th National Crime Prevention Week activities.
“This crime prevention week, the focus would be the youths. We would ask the DepEd (Department of Education) to allow us to orient the Parent-Teacher Student Association about crime prevention and crime reporting.
The purpose is to help lessen victims of crimes, especially the young children,” Asuga said during a media conference on Monday.
He said they would like to strengthen the community about crime reporting, focusing on prevention instead of the solution.
Asuga was the guest of honor during Monday’s flag raising at Camp Martin Delgado here.
He said since it is a new initiative, they coordinated with the DepEd last year for the conduct of orientations. The regional director of DepEd will send communications to schools to allow police officers to hold the activity that may go even beyond the National Crime Prevention Week.
Police Regional Office 6 (Western Visayas) director, Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky, for his part, said the PNP is always ready when it comes to crime prevention, especially as the holiday season nears.
“We will be intensifying our deployment, our intelligence monitoring. At the same time, review our crime-prone areas where they will concentrate,” he said in the same media conference.
He said historical data would show that crimes happen in shopping malls during the "ber" months.
“Probably, our police officers will be coordinating with the different security agencies to strategize how to address problems like shoplifting,” he added. (PNA)
