ILOILO CITY – Ports and the airport in Iloilo province are urged to impose strict health measures to prevent the entry and spread of Mpox here and in neighboring cities and municipalities.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod, during its regular session on Wednesday, unanimously supported the resolution authored by Councilors Alan Zaldivar and Candice Magdalane Tupas, calling for stricter health measures.

“Measures, including the installation of thermal scanners at airports and ports as well as increased visual surveillance by officers, must be implemented. Surveillance may also be increased by implementing a health declaration system,” the resolutions stated.

The resolution added that while travel and trade through ports and airports contribute to economic development and welfare of the people, they may also pose public health risks.

“Today’s high traffic at airports and ports can play a key role in the spread of the disease through persons and conveyances,” it said.

Mpox is a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus. It typically begins with flu-like symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, and fatigue. Rashes develop within a few days. (PNA)
