MANILA – The Metro Manila Council (MMC) has approved a resolution that urges local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila to conduct an information and education campaign to raise awareness about leptospirosis among the populace on the nature, symptoms, and risks to life and health of the disease caused by exposure to floodwaters.

In a press briefing held at the MMDA head office in Pasig City on Wednesday, MMDA Acting Chairman, lawyer Don Artes, said through MMDA Regulation No. 24-003 (series of 2024), children and adults are prohibited from swimming, playing, gallivanting and/ or unnecessary wading or doing any other leisurely activities in floodwaters.

In a media release, Artes said “each LGU may pass their own ordinances and penalties for violators of this regulation.”

The crafting of ordinances and penalties is left to the LGUs since they can more effectively deal with the situation in their own communities, given their familiarity with the peculiarities of their circumstances.

In August, the Department of Health (DOH) said the number of reported leptospirosis cases nationwide increased by 17 percent after the onslaught of Super Typhoon Carina.

A total of 255 new cases were logged from July 21 to Aug. 3, compared with the 217 cases recorded from July 7 to 20.

Cases of the disease usually rise during the rainy season.

MMC President and San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said their city already passed an ordinance that bans and penalizes individuals from doing leisure activities such as swimming and playing in floodwaters.

DOH Undersecretary Dr. Gloria Balboa advised LGUs to ensure proper waste disposal, maintaining cleanliness, and rodent control in their areas to steer clear of leptospirosis.

Further, Artes assured the DOH can expect full support from the Metro Manila mayors in raising awareness on the dangers, risks, and preventive measures for leptospirosis. (PR)
