CEBU CITY – The police chief of the southern town of Argao in Cebu province survived an ambush Friday morning.

Major Janus Giangan said he survived the attack after heeding an earlier warning that he was allegedly targeted by an armed group as he and his team were about to serve an arrest warrant against a drug suspect identified as Joeraldine Gevana.

A shot from a sniper targeting Giangan happened around 5:45 a.m. at Barangay Jampang, Argao.
The attack resulted in a shootout between the law enforcers and at least 10 armed men, including Gevana.

The shootout lasted for an hour. No other suspect was arrested.
Gevana sustained a gunshot wound while Giangan’s subordinate, Patrolman Joseph Berlama, was also wounded in the shootout.

Both were rushed to the hospital but Gevana was declared dead on arrival. (PNA)
