MANILA – As the world observes International Day of Peace, Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez called on Filipinos to take greater action to help build and embrace a culture of harmony and peace.

In a statement, Galvez said the Philippines has been aspiring to be a “potential global model for its success in resolving internal armed conflicts.”

“For years, it has demonstrated that principled diplomacy and peaceful solutions are not only possible but essential for sustainable development and lasting harmony,” Galvez said.

“The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity encourages every Filipino to embrace a culture of peace, where dialogue, understanding, and cooperation are the cornerstones of our interactions,” it added.

The government has entered into peace agreements with armed revolutionary groups, the most recent being that with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in 2014 which paved the way for the creation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

It is also currently negotiating with the Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front of the Philippines (CPP/NDF) to end its decades old armed struggle.

Under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Galvez vowed that the government will continue to pursue a “principled and peaceful resolutions to all internal armed conflicts” in line with its thrust for a more just, equitable, and inclusive society for all Filipinos.

“Let us work together to address the root causes of conflict, such as poverty, inequality, and injustice, by shoring up peace investments to the countryside and vulnerable communities,” Galvez said.

“As we celebrate this year's National Peace Consciousness Month, let us be inspired by the countless Filipinos who have dedicated their lives to peace and reconciliation. Let us honor their legacy by continuing to work towards a more peaceful and prosperous Philippines and a world where violence and conflict are a thing of the past."

In 2001, the United Nations declared that every Sept. 21 “shall henceforth be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day.”

In the Philippines, September is declared National Peace Consciousness Month to boost awareness and sustain peacebuilding as a cornerstone of national development, greater harmony and unity. (with reports from Priam F. Nepomuceno/PNA)
