SHARIFF AGUAK, Maguindanao del Sur – Police and military forces are pursuing gunmen responsible for the fatal ambush of an off-duty militiaman in Rajah Buayan town, this province, on Sunday afternoon.

Col. Ruel Sermese, provincial police director, identified the victim as 42-year-old Akasim Resuma, a resident of Sultan sa Barongis town, Maguindanao del Sur, and a member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU).

“The assailants, riding on separate motorcycles, followed Resuma before ambushing him,” Sermese told reporters Monday.

Resuma, who was assigned to the Army's 40th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Tukanalipao, Mamasapano town, was on his way home around 5:30 p.m. when attacked by the still unidentified gunmen along the national highway in Barangay Melib, Rajah Buayan.

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators recovered spent shells from a .45-caliber pistol at the crime site as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities are continuing their search for the perpetrators. (PNA)
