NEW YORK – UN Secretary-General António Guterres voiced extreme concern with the escalation of the conflict in Lebanon and appealed for an immediate ceasefire.
"An all-out war must be avoided in Lebanon at all costs, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon must be respected,'' said Guterres in a statement issued Oct. 1.
The Secretary-General appealed to the international community to urgently support the USD426 million humanitarian appeal launched in Beirut Tuesday.
"The Secretary-General will continue his contacts, and his representatives on the ground will also continue their efforts to de-escalate the situation,'' the statement added. (WAM)
