Bullpups, Junior Warriors triumph in UAAP boys volleyball

MANILA – Defending champion National University Nazareth School and University of the East scored contrasting wins to share second place in the UAAP Season 87 High School Boys’ Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday at the Paco Arena in Manila.

NU needed only 71 minutes to conquer Ateneo, 25-8, 25-13, 25-9, while UE recovered from a second-set loss to prevail over Adamson University, 25-13, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20.

The Bullpups and the Junior Warriors improved their records to 4-1, behind the University of Santo Tomas Junior Spikers (4-0).

Matthew Thomas Abut led the NU with 11 points on six attacks, four aces, and a block, followed by Yuan Mendoza with eight attacks and two blocks, and skipper Herbert Miguel Egger with eight points, including two aces.

The only players who managed to score for the winless Eagles were Ethan Joseph Rivera who had six attacks and one ace, while Xavier Merit Castillo and skipper Ken Harvey Nicolas chipped in five points apiece.

Meanwhile, skipper Lance Danielle Babon and Christian Lewis Antonio delivered 15 points each for the Junior Warriors, who took a 17-10 lead in the fourth set.

Lance Gian Flestado contributed 13 points, including three blocks, while Clarence John Hades Gianan made three blocks and two aces to finish with 11 points.
Adamson, in fourth place at 2-3, was paced by Jims Reaven Ducusin, who had 13 attacks.

Brice Malinao added 12 points, including back-to-back attacks that put the Baby Falcons within 19-23.

But Babon scored on an attack and Gianan had a block as the Junior Warriors wrapped up the match in one hour and 43 minutes.

Marcus Dulay made 22 excellent sets while Justine Rhaine Lopez had 12 receptions and eight digs. (PNA)
