MANILA – This year’s Philippine Resilience Awards (PRA) pivots the crucial role of women and the youth in advancing climate action and disaster risk reduction that positively impacts a community.

In a statement on Thursday, Climate Change Commission Secretary Robert E.A. Borje said that as one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, the Philippines faces an urgent need for enhanced preparedness and effective resilience strategies.

“The award seeks to acknowledge and support the outstanding contributions of individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to strengthen community resilience and develop adaptation plans for climate-induced disasters,” he said.

He added that this year’s theme, “Kababaihan at Kabataan: Katatagan ng Bayan," embodies the significant role of women and youth in building a climate-resilient community.

Meanwhile, Borje also highlighted the importance of strategic multi-stakeholder engagement and partnerships in achieving a resilient country.

Recently, the CCC has partnered with the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and the National Resilience Council (NRC) through a
Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the 2024 PRA, in collaboration with the Office of Senator Loren Legarda, to recognize women and youth who champion resilience.

Other partners include Arise Philippines, a private sector alliance for disaster-resilient societies, and the Women's International Network on Disaster Risk Reduction (WINDRR),

Maria Teresita Pastor Medado, a convenor from WINDRR, emphasized the power of collective action and strength.

“This recognition will bring women and youth to become beacons of success in climate action, driving innovative solutions and cultivating a climate-resilient community,“ she stated.

The awarding of winners for the PRA 2024 is slated for Nov. 25, 2024. (PNA)
