PALO, Leyte – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Eastern Visayas has collected PHP11.47 billion from January to September 2024, hitting its target for the first three quarters of the year and exceeding the actual earnings in the previous year, the tax agency reported on Tuesday.

The BIR regional office here surpassed the PHP11.38 billion goal, up from the PHP9.61-billion revenue collected during the same period of 2023.

BIR-Eastern Visayas Director Edith Yap is upbeat that they will surpass the PHP15-billion target for the year with big collections arising from the implementation of major infrastructure projects in the region.

“We are very hopeful of good performance until the end of this year. As of September, we have been hitting the target. The infrastructure development in the region is very robust,” Yap told reporters during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas forum here.

Of the total collection last year, the Tacloban revenue district office (RDO) in northern Leyte and Biliran province posted a total of PHP4.97-billion generated taxes; followed by Ormoc RDO in western Leyte at PHP2.55 billion; Calbayog RDO in Samar, PHP1.24 billion; Catarman RDO in Northern Samar, PHP982.62 million; Borongan RDO in Eastern Samar PHP898.54 million; and Maasin RDO in Southern Leyte, PHP820.14 million.

Although four of the region’s six RDOs failed to meet the January to September 2024 target, their collections are still higher compared to the same period last year.

The top contributors to the region’s overall collections are the RDOs in Tacloban City and Ormoc City, both in Leyte province where big businesses are located.

The tax agency is also counting on computerization projects like an online system for transfer tax transactions, electronic certificate registration, and an electronic tax information system to enhance revenue generation.

BIR has been stepping up compliance monitoring through existing programs like the run against tax evaders and Oplan Kandado. (PNA)
