DAVAO CITY – Mindanao is in a crucial phase of infrastructure development that will accelerate its socio-economic growth, according to Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Secretary Leo Tereso Magno.
During the 1st Mindanao Infrastructure Summit held Thursday at the SMX Convention Center, Magno emphasized that infrastructure is key to unlocking the region’s economic potential and addressing long-standing issues such as unemployment and poverty.
"Mindanao has historically faced high poverty rates and limited employment opportunities due to fragmented infrastructure across regions. To unlock opportunities and improve lives, we need essential connectivity,” Magno said.
The summit follows a MinDA Board Resolution passed during its 14th meeting on July 27, 2024, which highlighted the need for collaboration among stakeholders to build quality infrastructure that fosters a resilient and thriving Mindanao.
Magno stressed that robust infrastructure connects supply chains, facilitates the movement of goods and services, and drives economic expansion. It plays a foundational role in regional socio-economic development by improving trade, investment, productivity, tourism, disaster resilience, and overall quality of life.
"Infrastructure is not just physical. It includes digital elements that connect people, communities, goods, information, markets, and resources. It is an enabler of development," he said.
Citing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s recent State of the Nation Address, Magno reiterated the administration’s commitment to sustained, strategic, and timely infrastructure projects, positioning Mindanao for significant growth by 2028.
“These efforts are part of the broader initiative to build a ‘Bagong Pilipinas,’ with Mindanao poised to flourish alongside the country’s other major islands in terms of physical development and economic progress,” Magno added.
He also underscored the importance of government and private sector collaboration in achieving this vision for Mindanao.
"Infrastructure will elevate the quality of life, enhance trade and commerce, attract investors, promote social inclusion, boost tourism, and ensure disaster resilience—all vital for securing the prosperity of our nation," Magno said. (PNA)
