TAGBILARAN CITY -- Melody Perez of Central Visayas delivered the tournament's first gold medal when she ruled the 3,000 meters track event in the seniors division of the Private Schools Athletic Association Sports Foundation, Inc. (PRISAA) National Games on Monday at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex oval here.
Perez clocked 11 minutes and 33.81 seconds to win the race over Mary Joy Motin of Calabarzon, who registered 11:34.15 to claim the silver medal. Rodelyn Onato of Western Visayas settled for the bronze medal with a time of 11:37.43.
Western Visayas collected two gold medals courtesy of Kim Villaruz and Ara Rhabea Delotavo in the girls youth division.
Villaruz topped the 3,000 meters in 14 minutes and 47.91 seconds while her teammate Marjorie Basea took the silver in 14:15.00. The bronze medal went to Melanie Paderanga of Northern Mindanao, who clocked 15:49.88.
Delotavo, on the other hand, ruled the 100-meter hurdles in 16 minutes and 36.00, while her teammate Kyla Marie Almalbis clocked 16:66.00 followed by Michaella Marcarejo of Cagayan Valley (17:12.00).
In shot put, Cagayan Valley showed its supremacy by dominating the boys senior and the boys and girls youth divisions.
Jun Jun Domingo submitted 12.34 meters to win the gold in the boys senior division. Jun Mose Estrada of Central Visayas measured 12.10 meters to claim the silver while Renzy John Gemolaga of Western Visayas took the bronze in 11.67 meters.
In the boys secondary division, Reynald Joseph Casa bagged the gold medal in 12.50 meters while Western Visayas bets Jumel Eudila (11.94 meters) and Joseph Pabalinas (8.95 meters) won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Hazel Paggaduan won the girls youth gold medal in 9.60 meters, beating Cynthia Caceres of Bicol Region (8.88 meters) and Andrea Baylon of Western Visayas (8.39 meters).
Sheinne Sanchez of Northern Mindanao had the best throw of 10.35 meters to win the senior girls division. Cagayan Valley's Lorelaine Hidalgo took the silver in 10.09 meters while Bera Rose Saragena of Central Visayas got the bronze medal in 9.32 meters.
In men's volleyball, Bicol Region defeated Mimaropa, 25-21, 25-17; Calabarzon downed Central Luzon, 25-23, 25-17; and Southern Mindanao beat Northern Mindanao, 25-14, 23-25, in the elimination round played at the Holy Name University covered court.
More than 4,000 athletes from 16 regions are taking part in the 2018 PRISAA National Games, which carries the theme "Sports: Transcending Barriers Through Unity and Camaraderie".
The tournament, which is supported by the Commission on Higher Education and the Philippine Sports Commission, features 18 sports namely athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, dance sport, football, karatedo, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis, beach volleyball, indoor volleyball and weightlifting in both seniors and juniors divisions.
