2 Filipino boxers lose title bouts in South Africa

DAVAO CITY—Two Filipino boxers dropped their respective title bouts against South African opponents in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa over the weekend.

Joseph "The Hunter" Ambo of Pangasinan lost to Yanga Sigqibo of South Africa via unanimous decision at the International Convention Centre in East London on Sunday (July 28).

It was Ambo's second defeat in 12 fights while Sigqibo improved his record to 13-1-1 and retained his World Boxing Organization Inter-Continental super flyweight title.

Sigqibo captured his title against Keyvin Lara of Nicaragua on Dec. 7, 2019.

In July last year, he also defeated another Filipino fighter, Rene Dacquel, to win the vacant World Boxing Council International super flyweight title.

Meanwhile, Richie "Magnum" Mepranum of Sarangani Province also lost to undefeated South African Lodumo “9mm” Lamiti via a referee technical decision in the 11th round in the Orient Theater also in East London, Eastern Cape on Sunday.

With his victory, Lamati took the vacant International Boxing Federation Inter-Continental super bantamweight and improved his record to 16-0-1 with 10 stoppages.

Mepranum, 32, absorbed his eighth defeat in 43 fights. (PNA)
