MANILA -- Several top officials from the national and local levels will grace the opening ceremonies of the Batang Pinoy National Finals in Puerto Princesa City on Sunday.

Headlining the national officials at the opening rites are Games and Amusement Board chairman Baham Mitra, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez and PSC Commissioners Charles Maxey and Arnold Agustin, Education Secretary Leonor Briones, and Senator Bong Go.

Puerto Princesa Mayor Cecil Bayron and Palawan Governor Jose Alvarez will also be in attendance.

“We’re thankful for the opportunity and we’re looking forward to a successful staging,” said Bayron.

On the eve of the Batang Pinoy nationals opening, project director Guillermo Iroy assured that the city and the meet organizers are now ready.

“It’s all systems go for the National Finals of the Batang Pinoy and we’re ready for the growing number of delegates that will take part in the games,” said Iroy.

Baguio, which won the overall championship last year, is out to defend the title on the road, but Luzon rival Laguna could pose as a huge challenge after ruling the Luzon qualifiers in Ilagan, Isabela earlier this year.

Some 10,000 athletes and officials are expected to grace this year's Batang Pinoy nationals, where a chance to represent the Philippines in the Children of Asia Games next year in Russia is on the line.

“The worthiest performers here will get the chance to represent the national team to the Children of Asia Games,” said Iroy. (PNA)
