DUMAGUETE CITY – This capital city of Negros Oriental has made it to the “Hall of Fame” in sports tourism after receiving its 3rd national recognition as Sports Organizer of the Year in the country.

The award was given by a private group of professional organizers in the sports tourism industry, said city Public Information Officer Dems Rey Demecillo on Tuesday afternoon.

Demecillo said the city government was notified last week about the award.

The city, headed by Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo, received the award for three consecutive years starting in 2017 from Selrahco Management and Consultancy Services, the Department of Tourism, Philippine Sports Commission, and Philippine Gaming Corporation, Demecillo said.

The award is given to an LGU that has contributed to the success of a sporting event or events showcasing the potential of a city or town in the Philippines, he added.

The formal awarding will be held sometime in December.

Dumaguete has successfully hosted and staged big sporting events over the last few years such as the Dumaguete Triathlon, Children’s Games, the Dumaguete Dragon Boat Challenge, National Frisbee Ultimate Championship, Philippine National Games, Batang Pinoy, the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association, Philippine Super Liga Spike on Tour, and the 1st Southeast Asia Beach Handball.

This capital city could have hosted some 3,000 students in the region for the Association of Southeast Asian Schools Games this November but was postponed for next year due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic. (PNA)
