CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Mayor Rolando Uy reminded residents here to follow rules and pay their taxes diligently, as it is among the "simple ways" to honor the nation's freedom.

Uy and other Northern Mindanao leaders joined Monday the country’s celebration of its 125th Independence Day.

Following the Philippine independence and the birth of a nation from foreign colonizers, Uy said it has been part of Filipino society to maintain its state of democracy and freedom, which also entails "responsibilities."

"Following simple rules, such as obeying traffic rules. If you're a commuter, you cross in the pedestrian lanes and alight in designated stops; if you're the driver, follow traffic signs, and don't add burden to the traffic," he said in speech.

Uy also told consumers to ask for receipts and make sure commercial establishments pay the right amount of taxes, as this will be used by the government to provide services back to the public.

"I also urged everyone to buy local products if possible as this will help the local producers and their families," he said.

In Misamis Oriental, Gingoog City Mayor Erick Cañosa said the efforts and sacrifices of the Filipino heroes have served as guides in public service.

"Through the help of God, the power of our unity and love of country, to others and ourselves, we can overcome any challenges," he said.

Misamis Oriental Governor Peter Unabia, for his part, said by protecting the Philippines' sovereignty and performing civic duties is one way to honor the heroism of those who fought for the nation's freedom.

"It is our inherent duty as citizens to ensure that the Philippines fulfills its destiny as a great and prosperous nation," he said.

Meanwhile, Iligan City Mayor Frederick Siao said the Philippine independence provided every citizen its vested rights and freedoms, among them is the freedom of speech.

"We have so many freedoms, but sometimes we have taken this for granted," he said.

Siao said while we exercise freedom of speech and expression, this is, however, not absolute.

"We can freely express our opinions and thoughts as long as we do not violate our laws," he said. (PNA)
