MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – The inflation rate in Pangasinan went down to 5.1 percent in June from 6.1 percent in May, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

In a statement obtained by the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday, lawyer Sheila de Guzman, PSA Ilocos regional director, said the province’s inflation rate in June was mainly brought about by a lower year-on-year growth rate in the index of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 7.3 percent from 8.1 percent in May.

“Also contributing to the weakening inflation rate of the province during the month were the decreased inflation rates in furnishings, household equipment, routine household maintenance, alcoholic beverages and tobacco, personal care, miscellaneous goods and services, recreation, sport, and culture, housing, water, electricity, gas, and others, information and communication, and transport,” she said.

However, the commodity of health showed a faster year-on-year growth rate posted at 8.6 percent, she added.

The commodities of clothing and footwear, restaurants and accommodation service, education services, and financial services retained their previous month’s inflation.

De Guzman said the inflation for sugar, confectionery and desserts at 30.7 percent influenced the downward trend of food inflation in June 2023, while the slower annual growth rates compared to that in the previous month were also observed.

Fish and other seafood inflation rate were at 13.1 percent; milk, other dairy products and eggs at 12.9 percent; oils and fats at 9.9 percent; flour, bread, pasta and others at 9.8 percent; vegetables, tubers and others at 6.5 percent; ready-made foods and others at 6.1 percent; and meat of slaughtered land animals at 0.7 percent.

The inflation rate in the Ilocos Region weakened to 4.3 percent in June 2023, lower than the 5.2 percent in May. (PNA)
