LEGAZPI CITY – At least 748 Mayon-affected residents from Guinobatan town in Albay province received payments after rendering community service in the evacuation centers being used as temporary shelters.

Under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Displaced/Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), each beneficiary received the first tranche of salaries of PHP3,650 for the completion of 10 days in the 30-day work period.

Upon completion of the 30-day work program, each beneficiary will get PHP10,950 to be distributed in tranches.

On Friday, Johana Vi Gasga, DOLE-Bicol spokesperson, said the payout for the Mayon-affected beneficiaries staying in Mauraro Elementary School is part of the assistance provided by DOLE during President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s visit in Albay last month.

"DOLE-Bicol regional director Ma. Zenaida A. Angara-Campita personally visited the evacuation site to ensure that government assistance is provided to the evacuees. She also monitored the implementation of TUPAD works, particularly vegetable gardening and keeping the site clean,” Gasga said in a report.

In a statement, Campita said the DOLE-Bicol wants each beneficiary and affected families to feel the government's help.

TUPAD is a community-based package of assistance that provides emergency employment for displaced workers, underemployed and seasonal workers, for a minimum period of 10 days, but not to exceed a maximum of 30 days, depending on the nature of work to be performed.

DOLE-Bicol also awarded PHP4.9 million for additional 1,248 TUPAD beneficiaries. (PNA)
