BUTUAN CITY – Thirty-one adolescent mothers from Dinagat Islands’ town of San Jose received timely education and support interventions from the provincial government on Thursday.

In a statement Friday, the provincial government said the adolescent mothers underwent a daylong Learning Package for Parent Education on Adolescent Health Development (LPPEAHD) facilitated by the Provincial Population Office (PPO) and the Office of Gov. Nilo Demerey Jr.

During the activity, the adolescent mothers were given input on their vital role in supporting their well-being and the healthy development of their children.

“The activity is part of the Social Protection Program for Adolescent Mothers and Children or SPPAMC of the provincial government,” the statement indicated.

The implementation of the SPPAMC, it added, ensures that young mothers are provided with learnings and education related to child development, health, nutrition, and parenting.

The activity was spearheaded by Executive Assistant IV Marichu Demerey, who represented Gov. Demerey, and PPO head Lucio Mercado.

After the activity, each of the young mothers was also provided with medicines and vitamins for their children and five kilos of rice.

In a phone interview Friday, Gov. Demerey said the intervention of the provincial government is also intended to improve the relationship of adolescent mothers to their children.

“We also provide them with education programs that focus on enhancing the parent-child relationship for them to gain a better understanding of their child's needs, emotions, and behaviors,” he said.

He added that the program will also be continuously implemented in other towns of the province to enhance the knowledge and skills of young mothers in ensuring the overall development of their children. (PNA)
