The Philippines bagged a silver medal and three Medallions of Excellence. At least 23 Filipino technical-vocational (tech-voc) graduates competed with participants from the 10 ASEAN member countries.

“You have shown the world that Filipino excellence in the tech-voc field knows no limits, and our skilled professionals are indeed world-class," Secretary Suharto Mangudadatu was quoted as saying in a news release.

He congratulated the delegation and urged the next trainees or competitors not to lose hope if they see their works are not good at first.

This year's competition featured various skill areas such as on Automobile Technology, Beauty Therapy, Cooking, Electrical Installation, Electronics, Fashion Technology, Graphic Design Technology, Hairdressing, Information Network Cabling, Internet-of-Things, IT Network System Administration, IT Software Solutions for Business, Mechanical Engineering CAD, Mechatronics, Mobile Robotics, Rapid Transit System, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Restaurant Service and Web Technology.

Ana Claire Hernandez won a silver medal in Graphic Design Technology, finishing second behind Joanne Li of Singapore. Hernandez also received the Best of Nation Award for garnering the highest number of points among Philippine competitors.

Medallion of Excellence, on the other hand, were awarded to Gwyneth Nicole Abarquez for Restaurant Service, Cristian Lasaruz Asanza for Electrical Installation, and Allen Gacweng for Cooking.

This medal is granted to participants whose performance met the international standards based on the criteria set by the WorldSkills International.

Mangudadatu earlier said he is optimistic that the Filipino participants will gain the experience and knowledge which will help them to be successful in life. He also assured that TESDA ensures that training programs are at par with international standards.

According to TESDA, the last time the country brought home medals from the said competition was in 2018, when one silver and two bronzes were won for Visual Graphic Technology, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, and Hairdressing. (PNA)
