Army bets Basin, Gomobos rule 200m in ROTC Games

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Jerome Marc Dave Basin and Christine Gomobos ruled the 200 meters in the Philippine Army category of the 2023 Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Games Mindanao leg athletics competition held Monday at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex track and field stadium here.

The 21-year-old Basin, a BS Industrial Management sophomore at Tangub City State College in Misamis Occidental, won the men's event in 23.9 seconds.

Rico Meller of Davao Oriental State University took the silver medal in 24 seconds, while Jefrey Bantiling of Mindanao State University (24.8 seconds) settled for the bronze medal.

Gomobos, a second year Criminology student at Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU) in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte province, topped the women's division in 28.20 seconds.

She beat Tangub City Global College bets Jessa Corpuz (29.0 seconds) and Ronalyn Suson (29.6 seconds).

"I thank God for this victory," said the 20-year-old Gomobos, who was born and raised in Barangay Punta Blanca.

"I also want to thank coach Hery Cervantes, my family and friends for the support," added the petite runner who belongs to the indigenous Subanen tribe.

Gomobos collected her second gold medal in the 4x100m with Shara Jamisola, Rahima Jamil and Mary Joy Sumilhig (57.5 seconds).

"I hope I can keep my winning form tomorrow (Aug. 29)," said Gomobos, who also entered in the 100m and 4x400m.

Prior to the ROTC Games, she has competed at the 2022 Mindanao Association for State and Tertiary Schools (MASTS) held in Mati, Davao Oriental where she was crowned 100m hurdles champion.

JRMSU secured its third gold medal from the men's 4x100m relay team of Leonel Rey Quinanola, Jeylord Ajero, Jan Michael Sosmena and Roger Austria Jr. (48.7 seconds).

The silver medal went to Tangub City Global City College (48.9 seconds) while JH Cerilles State College (49.6 seconds) got the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, John Barey Asdane of Northern Mindanao State University-Zamboanga City (26.1 seconds) and Nerisha Nicole Aringoy (29.1 seconds) dominated their respective divisions in the Philippine Air Force category.

Winners in the Philippine Navy category are Raphael de la Cruz (24.4 seconds) and Shakira Tuahan (30.2 seconds).

"I'm grateful to be a part of this tournament. I am very happy for winning the gold medal," said the 20-year-old Tuahan, who is taking up Marine Technology at the Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology.

She clocked 38.9 seconds to beat schoolmate Jopayra Abunawas (42.1 seconds). There were only two entries in the 200m and 100m.

"I will do my best to win again," said Tuahan, a native of Barangay Tongbangkaw in Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi province.

In women’s volleyball, Davao De Oro State College (DDOSC) defeated University of Mindanao-Davao City, 25-17, 25-14, 25-22, at the Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic University Gym.
