GUANGZHOU -- Over 150 participants from various media entities in 101 countries gathered here on Sunday to review its role and responsibility and build consensus in addressing common challenges facing the media industry.
The 5th World Media Summit (WMS) was officially opened on Sunday morning by Xinhua News Agency President Fu Hua in this capital city of Guangdong Province.
During the opening program, Mr. Fu said the event themed, "Boosting Global Confidence, Promoting Media Development," will expand channels of cooperation and promote sharing of best practices, capacity building, and people to people exchanges as well as the dissemination of relevant news that can contribute to "peace and development around the world."
Other notable speakers from the United Nations and leading media organizations such as Reuters and Associated Press said the summit participants must find ways and focus on issues currently affecting the media industry such as in addressing the proliferation of fake news and disinformation, use of artificial intelligence, and protection and safety of journalists, among others.
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Xinhua President Fu also inked several media cooperation with international agencies including the renewal of its news exchange cooperation with the Philippine News Agency represented by News and Information Bureau Director Luis Ausan Morente.
The 5th World Media Summit, co-hosted by Xinhua and the provincial governments of Guangdong and Yunnan, will run until Dec. 8 in the cities of Guangzhou and Kunming. (PNA)
