LAOAG CITY – Five fisherfolk from Ilocos Norte received PHP25,000 each on Monday for returning floating shabu worth millions found in the province’s coastal waters last June and July.

They were Johny Mata Zamora, 52, of Barangay Bobon, Burgos; Marjun Magarato Paltep, 46; Marnie Cariaga, 42; and Geronimo Garote Calasag of Barangay Davila, Pasuquin; and Fragante Felix Patoc Jr., 41, of Barangay 32-B La Paz, this city.

Authorities said a total of 6,219.86 grams of shabu valued at PHP42.2 million were  recovered in Ilocos Norte in June and July.

Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc and Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office Director Col. Frederick Obar distributed the reward outside the capitol during the kickoff celebration of the Philippine Councilors League Week and in time for the civil servants month observance.

“They are the shining examples of the simplicity, honesty, and integrity of the Ilocanos,” Manotoc said, assuring that those who will report wrongdoings will be rewarded and commended.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) earlier gave the fisherfolk PHP5,000 per pack of shabu found.

Authorities urged residents, particularly those living in the coastal areas, to remain vigilant and help report drug smuggling.

"These incidents highlight the importance of community awareness and cooperation in the fight against illegal drugs. We commend the fishermen and the other law enforcement agencies for their quick action and appeal to all residents to remain watchful in their neighborhoods," PDEA-Ilocos Director Joel Plaza said in a statement.
