MANILA – Paolo Javillonar scored 28 points as Letran defeated Arellano University, 86-79, to secure its second straight victory in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 100 men's basketball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Arena on Tuesday.
Javillonar, back in the game after serving a two-game suspension for playing in unsanctioned leagues, also had eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks for the Knights, who gained a share of second place with the San Sebastian College Stags, Mapua Cardinals and University of Perpetual Altas at 2-1.
Sherick Estrada contributed 14 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one block, while James Miller added11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals as Letran overcame a 12-point deficit in the third quarter.
"It is very important to trust the players. Every minute, I always say, no matter what happens, no one will give in regardless of the lead, let's try, one point at a time," Letran coach Allen Ricardo said.
Maverick Vinoya finished with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Chiefs, who remained winless after three games.
Cyril Hernal and Lorenz Capulong scored 11 points each while Renzo Abiera and Jeadan Ongotan chipped in 10 points apiece.
In the other game, Emilio Aguinaldo College stunned defending champion San Beda University, 68-55.
Harvey Pagsanjan had 14 points and seven rebounds while JC Luciano added 13 points, including four triples, and eight rebounds as the Generals tied their opponents at 2-2 for third place.
Yukien Andrada led the Red Lions with 12 points and six rebounds followed by Jomel Puno and Oliver Tagle with nine and seven points, respectively.
Meanwhile, College of Saint Benilde eyes its third consecutive win against Perpetual at 12 noon on Wednesday. Jose Rizal University faces San Sebastian at 2:30 p.m. (PNA)
